Searching for the Northern Lights

Will fate bless us with this wonderful natural sky light?

A question frequently asked by prospective visitors to Lapland is ‘Will we see the Northern Lights?’

This is impossible to answer as the Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon – all we can say is that if the weather conditions are right and with a hint of luck, you may be blessed to see them in their full glory when you stay in Luosto.  For previous displays here have been magnificent.

The Aurora displays are commonly pale green and pink and shape a variety of forms, however occasionally the lights dance across the sky in shades of red, yellow, green , blue and violet.

The Northern Lights are actually the result of a collision of gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere with charged particles released from the Sun’s atmosphere.

Winter in the north is generally a good season to view the lights.  The long periods of darkness and the frequency of clear nights, provide many good opportunities to watch the auroral displays.  Usually the best time of night (on clear nights) to watch for Northern Lights displays is between 22.00 and 02.00, although they can, and quite often are, seen either side of these times.
